Westerly Winds

This concert band was formed in September 2013 as a teaching band, bringing together players from a wide range of musical backgrounds — from complete beginners with no formal musical education to musicians returning to their instruments after a break. What united the band from the outset was a shared enthusiasm to learn, improve, and make music together.

A strong desire to perform in public has been a key driver in the band’s musical development over the years. In April 2023, the band welcomed its new Musical Director, Roger Sansom, whose energy, encouragement, and leadership continue to support the band’s growth and progression.

The band includes a broad range of instruments, encompassing woodwind, brass, and rhythm sections, and is always keen to hear from potential new players who are interested in joining.

The repertoire is wide-ranging and designed to suit a variety of performances and audiences, from classical favourites such as Pachelbel’s Canon and Orpheus Overture to popular and contemporary works including Uptown Funk and Bohemian Rhapsody. From stage and screen classics to jazz, swing, and pop, the band’s music appeals to audiences of all ages and tastes.

Rehearsals take place every Wednesday evening from 7.30pm at the YouFoundation, Page Road, Staple Hill, Bristol.
